RESPONSE TO COVID-19
COVID-19 has affected everyone globally. The nationwide lockdown announced by the Government of India to contain the spread of COVID-19 has affected every life in rural and urban communities. Most of the tribal communities who live a hand to mouth existence in Palghar are equally affected. The children who got their daily supplementary nutrition intake from the mid-day meals served in the Anganwadis remained affected as the Anganwadis had to be closed. The same situation is witnessed in urban slums of Mumbai.
Even during the lockdown, the Safe Kids Foundation’s program team of Anganwadi teachers and helpers in Palghar actively supported the children by providing them with supplementary nutritious food by visiting their homes and by creating awareness about the most needed information on COVID-19 symptoms, prevention, precautions, and care, with special emphasis on respiratory hygiene, hand washing and use of masks.
“Regular nutritious food and hygiene kits are necessary to maintain good health, build immunity and fight infections”
1. Health evaluations of children every 6 months by Doctors. Supplementary Nutritious food daily provided to 370 children.
2. Training on hygiene and distribution of hygiene kits to children monthly.
3. Awareness creation on COVID-19 transmission, symptoms, preventions, care and precautions.
4. Nutrition and hygiene counseling to parents and to be mothers.
Daily Activities
Healthy Habits Healthy Kids (H3K) is a unique program implemented in collaboration with the ICDS. The program aims to reduce the deaths and morbidities among children caused due to malnutrition. When children are undernourished it affects their immunity and hampers their growth, the resistance to infections is lowered and are more susceptible to diarrheal diseases and other infections. With the aim to reduce malnutrition related deaths among children, supplementary nutrition and hygiene interventions are carried out at Anganwadi’s in Palghar by Safe Kids Foundation.
The program, Healthy Habits Healthy Kids has trained more than 50 ICDS teachers, created awareness for 3,000 parents, 1,300 children from the Anganwadis and schools in Palghar covered through education programs on hygiene.
Over 11,000 children from Mumbai Municipal Schools underwent hygiene education and training. The program remains of grave importance in the context of COVID-19 crisis and has enabled children to protect themselves from the infection.
Safe Kids Foundation is responding to the emerging crisis which has affected those living in utmost poverty, in whichever way possible. Malnourished children and families on streets, in rural and urban slums, will be the worst affected and are at the greatest risk.
We need your generous support to reach out to these children and families from challenged backgrounds.
