Safe Kids Foundation works with non-profit organizations, government and schools to promote awareness and teach that accidental deaths and injuries are preventable.
The ‘Safe Kids Walk This Way’ program, focuses on pedestrian safety, brings together teachers, parents, FedEx employee volunteers and safety advocates to teach students and encourage awareness on road/pedestrian safety and provide long term environmental improvements to make school zones and neighborhoods safe for child pedestrians.
The program is implemented through ‘train the trainers’ model in Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Delhi. Awareness programs, interactive classroom sessions and events are conducted on road safety in schools and communities to provide them with skills to be safe on the roads by following traffic rules and pedestrian safety rules. Various competitions and games are also conducted to reinforce the messages on road safety.
In the year 2014, according to the Accidental deaths and Suicides in India report, 11,418 children between the age group of 14 and 18 died in road collisions. Among them 9,390 were males and 2028 were females.
With the increase in accidents across India, the teenage group has become more prone to accidents. Teenagers being avid users of the latest mobile technology are also distracted while crossing due to use of these products. These injuries and accidents are preventable.
Safe Kids Foundation conducted a study with Indian Market Research Bureau to understand the incidence of distracted walking among teens, so that the findings could be used to design an intervention based on the needs of the teenagers in the age group of 13 years to 19years. The objectives of the study were to observe & understand the incidence of distracted walking among teenagers due to the use of technology related products (Mobile, music players, etc.) and to understand the influence and exposure to technology among teenagers.
